Pffft! I'll get the security guard penguins on them! No sane people allowed! Artichokes only!

If Caroline had any disgust for how sad a statement like that was, she didn't show it. It was probably swallowed up in her complete lack of patience anyways.
She hated this school, she hated this secrecy, and she hated not having any real friends yet.
"Guess what, buddy. You just got asked out."
She walked up to him, something of a ravenous nature glinting in her eyes. Caroline was usually sweet with a little sour aftertaste, but being all alone for so long had turned that hint of sour into a mind bogglingly tart treat. She was going to go to that ball, and she was going to make the biggest statement since the invention of fire and the disco ball, and this kid - she didn't even remember if she'd got his name - was going to like going along with her.
"Any objections?" She smiled, feeling so much better now that she had attached herself to someone.
She didn't expect any objections, and if she got one, she'd probably not pay any attention to it.
No one said no to Caroline. No one.

He blinked slowly beneath his hair. "Oh..." She had never actually asked anything, but he went along with it. He had learned people could be bizarre like that. His gaze drifted to her as she stepped closer to him. She was staring down at him with a zealous fire in her eyes, as if she now had the entire night planned and was determined to carry it out. Though this would intimidate most, Matt only stared up at her blankly, unperturbed by his fate.
He now got to his feet, brushing himself off a little and careful not to knock over the small pile of stones he had put together. "No," he answered lightly. "... But I probably ought to know your name." That had likely been the most words he had put into a sentence this entire encounter. The longer his sentences were, the more apparent his articulate manner of speech became. He spoke somewhat slowly, and his words weren't just spewed out, they were pronounced conscientiously. It sounded peculiar but at the same time quite pleasant.

"The name's Caroline." She beamed, happy that she didn't have to use her brute force of people skills to weasel him into a "yes." This would be great for the both of them. Caroline had a date now, free of hassle, and this kid actually got to stop moping and learn what it was like to be the star of a ball.
She'd have so much fun, and she'd see if she couldn't teach him a thing or two about parties while she was at it. He didn't seem like the "party" type, but oh well. She'd handle that hurdle when she got to it.
"And you might me?" She tried to be a bit more slow with her words this time. Caroline spoke fast normally, and even faster when she had a plan in the works. The boy on the other hand had this strange, deliberate way of speaking that quite frankly was a bit depressing.
Oh well, he was cute, wasn't he? One of those shy types and all. She didn't mind his odd customs, just as long as he wasn't psycho like that guy before.
Oh.... She'd better bring pepper spray to the ball that night, just in case....

"... Matt," he answered. A simple name seemed fitting for someone like him, someone so simple he was complex. Caroline seemed to fit her too, somehow. He couldn't help but wonder why names so often matched their wearers, often in ways that couldn't be put into words.
Abruptly his eyes filled with red, but like before within seconds the red seemed to drain back into his pupils. He shook himself a little, as if shaking water out of his hair. A dance didn't sound very appealing to him. His stomach gave a small churn at the idea, anxiety crawling through the back of his mind. He didn't do well in common social atmospheres, but he had been handling himself pretty well in school so far, with only a few mental breakdowns. And this girl must be very desperate indeed to resort to him; she seemed like quite a social creature, and he very obviously wasn't. He would feel bad if he turned her down.
