Tumult, in the Bite Cafe. Angry voices rising above the quiet little streets of the town. Quarreling, bickering. Call it what you want, but it was happening, and it was escalating fast.
Something of a fight might have broken out, had not the doors swung open, and Professor Daniel Crane strolled through.
Silence, utterly. White looked up from behind his counter. He'd been leaning over it, trying to quiet the din of the ever angry vampires, and he'd been severely failing. He was in the process of yelling at a particularly cheeky vampire as Crane walked in.
"About damn time!" White growled. He watched through slitted eyes as Crane took his usual seat in the corner. "I've been trying to tell them! It wasn't real!"
Crane only looked at him, as if he was thinking, and had been for a while. The vampires were angry, very much so. They crowded around him, hungry for revenge. White silenced them with a bark of commands.
"No one touch him!"
The vampires faltered, still growling. White couldn't hold them for long, and he looked to Crane for help.
"Come on, Daniel. Stop sulking and straighten this mess out."
Crane acknowledged him then, just barely moving his head to notice him as a part of the crowd.
"Right... I'm here in peace. I didn't come to sink you again."
The mention of that startled the crowd into a hushed murmur. White glared at them, holding his hand out at Crane.
"See? Not real. We planned it you idiots."
There was a moment of confusion as the word passed around the packed cafe, then there settled over it an unearthly contentment. The townspeople believed their master now.
White sighed heavily, slumping down into a stool behind the counter and pouring himself a bit of brandy. He took a sip, then set the glass on the table, forgetting it.
"Taking your sweet time... They aren't stupid, Daniel, as much as I'd like to think so. Vampires know when they've been tricked."
"Apparently not." Crane muttered. "They didn't know until I told them."
White had to shrug at that.
"They aren't geniuses, and fooling them was part of the plan. If they thought they were going to get a bite of the kids, then the kids thought they were going to get eaten. Simple as that."
He took a longer sip of his drink, not bothering to offer Crane any. The chimera wouldn't take alcohol, not even if it was excellent for toasting to a job well done.
"So, what brings you here? Something tells me it wasn't simply to inform my town of the recent change in strategy."
"It wasn't." Crane confirmed. He did look a little distracted. Head in the clouds, most likely. White rolled his eyes as he drained the glass.
"Well I'm just dying to know here."
The sarcasm was biting, but it didn't phase Crane. He replied evenly.
"I need to know, White. Are you ready for this to happen?"
White poured himself a lot more brandy. He'd need if if he was going to go through this again.
"Sure. About as ready as I can be. Why? Problems? Are they coming sooner than expected?"
Crane's silence was enough. Oh goody. Trouble rushing to their demise. White loved a good hopeless situation. He emptied his glass before listening to Crane.
"Yes. A lot sooner. It probably is a good thing the kids are willing to go this far for answers. Otherwise I wouldn't know how to motivate them."
"Threat of death works well, I've found."
White tipped his head to the crowd of vampires standing idly by. He'd threatened each and every one of them enough for them to know not to cross him. It worked well, considering. He'd done alright here.
"I'm sure it does..."
Crane didn't seem too enthused by the idea.
"Just a suggestion."
White got up from his seat, cleaning the counter off with a quick swipe of a towel. Crane rose to leave.
"We'll talk later." White grinned. "Just keep up with that gloomy thinking and you'll find an answer."
Crane nodded, not in agreement, but in farewell to White.
