as pretty as a car crash sexy as a stinger of a hornet in your arm JUST ANOTHER MODERN SWINGER All of nature swarmed around him as he plodded across the peaceful meadow. He passed a few people along the way who packed up their belongings from a small picnic. Unlike them, he had no one by his side, but this was how he preferred times like these. There was nothing more refreshing than sitting outside and just looking ahead at the picturesque outlay of the land. The previous week filled all of his days with a steady rain that, at first he liked until the ground spewed out water with each step. It made everyone miserable and he felt like a wet dog. Luckily, this week appeared more promising weather-wise and just in case the pretty days didn't last, he seized this one quickly.
The garm slowed down his pace and stumbled across a lone tree that provided minimal shade. The buds began to peek out from the tips of boughs. Though the tree appeared ripe of life and maybe a little flimsy, Davin decided it looked just strong enough to provide something for him to lean against. Whenever he wandered this way, he brought something with him, homework or just something to keep him from total boredom. Today proved no exception and today was the unfinished music theory homework that he couldn't afford not to do. Most of the times he sat there staring ahead, but today this homework prodded him and put a thorn in his side until he finished it.
But out here he felt away from everything. No added stress put on his shoulders, only the need to survive which was nature's natural calling. A breath of fresh air filed his lungs and the eighteen year old slumped over as he refocused on the homework that laid in front of him, a shabby little notebook that had too many pages ripped out and whose corners turned up from abuse.
"Oh glorious music theory," he muttered. Intervals, chords, triads, harmonic analysis, and other such fun sat on a packet of pages before him. These words made him feel like a real musician but the only thing he did in this music career thus far was play and memorize already written music. He played two instruments, one better than the other, and after ten years of practice he realized how belated he was learning this theory. A subconscious shrug and he soon began scribbling down on the page, trying to finish it so he could enjoy the rest of the day sitting out here in perfect solitude.
At least he assumed he sat in solitude. Concentration befell the old classmate and he jumped when a twang penetrated the atmosphere and caused him to jump and immediately look up. And he was almost done too with the packet of homework placed before him. The garm refused to be alert though and with a few more scribbles on the page, he put it away in the abused notebook before appearing somewhat interested in what caused the sharp sound.

The slim figure of a young woman walked along the path that lead to a place she had discovered before her classes had started. She really hadn't had the best day, and she just needed to chill by herself for a while. Aalish hadn't seen either of her friends, Maxim or Ciel, and she'd been surrounded by pushy strangers who wanted to 'get to know her better.' More like violate her personal space. She made a 'tsk' noise as that came to her mind and looked up at the bright sky.
That was another reason to dislike today. The sky was bright and sunny as could be, with no cloud in sight. How boring. To her, there was nothing more exhilerating than a good thunderstorm. The noise of the thunder, the light show of well, lightning. Everything about them made her skin tingle with delight as she saw she was coming closer to her destination. That bench meant she was almost there.
Aalish hadn't been here very long, and to be honest, she wasn't very comfortable here. She didn't think she would really. She missed France a great deal, especially the language. All these people spoke English, and although she knew it, it definitely wasn't in her comfort zone. At least she had her friends with her... It was then that she noticed she had stopped, and was staring. Staring at a guy who leaning against a tree, in the spot she had found earlier. Aalish contemplated walking away, and simply launching him from her spot, but she simply decided to look at him, seemingly lost in her own thoughts.
Why couldn't it have rained today ?

As he looked up, he noticed a figure. At first, Davin disregarded the girl standing there, but in a few seconds as he peered up inconspicuously again, he realized she still stood there. No words escaped her lips and she made no gestures; her general appearance seemed blank and he couldn't decide whether she appeared more lost or creepy. He shifted uncomfortably and bit his bottom lip. When she made no movement, he finally huffed to himself and slowly stood up, placing his homework back in the notebook and taking it in his hand.
"So do you normally stare at people until they're so uncomfortable they're obliged to move?" he inquired, somewhat sneeringly. Davin met many odd people in his days here, but no one had ever dared obediently stare at him to make him this uncomfortable. A garm usually made anyone else uncomfortable, but this was perverse and twisted. His expression bore a not-so-pleased and halfway annoyed look. But he let the sport go and straightened his posture, taking a hesitant step toward her but kept the nice and spacious distance between them.
Unfortunately he had not seen her around, but he judged her age to be similar to his. Probably someone who was in their own grade, and that bothered him, but he refused to mention anything. For now he gave her the exact blank stare she gave him, but his sported a more hidden perplexed look. "I'm so glad there's normal people wandering around like you," he muttered below his breath, not even attempting to conceal his words from her ears. Let her hear what he had to say, he didn't quite care. Didn't her mother ever teach her that staring was considered rude?

Aalish finally came to her senses when he spoke to her, and a response came to her before she had even processed his words in her head. "That's the idea actually. I've never focused on what people think of me to care." Well..., that sounded...robotic. If she hadn't lived the life she had, she might've flinched at the mechanical sound of her voice. Like the words were being forced out of her mouth, her French accent still managing to stand proud in the lifelessly spoken words.
Aalish had never pretended to be normal. She had been trained by her father to be impassive, and so she was. 'Your enemies could never beat you if they couldn't read you.' That was her father's saying, and she liked sticking to it. Especially since he hadn't been proved wrong yet.She could have been an emotional person, could have been...normal, but what did these people know anyway ? Acting like they knew her, they didn't have a clue. Sure, Maxim and Ciel certainly did, and of course her father had...she didn't have a mother as far as she knew..but she would have to. This guy didn't know her, and she would try her hardest to keep it that way.
A familiar twinge entered her at his muttered words. It was a mixture of hurt and anger, but mostly anger. She had been lost in thought, what was the big deal anyway ?!?! Who had given him the right to simply judge her as abnormal ? Last time she checked, that would be no one. "Hn, I was thinking for your information.." Well, that sounded intelligent...
Why did she say the first thing she thought of ?

The words that finally slipped out of her mouth caught him off guard and not even the mask-master Davin could hide his surprise from the mechanical sound of the words. And yet, he already knew the information she cared to share with him in these few seconds. He leaned back on his heels, not comfortable--not even beginning to get comfortable--enough to let down his guard. His eyes plastered on her and although he couldn't begin to match her lifeless stare, he managed to watch her with every fiber of his being. Let it show through that he stood on guard when around her, it wasn't as if morphing bunnies roamed this campus.
"I can clearly see that," he responded. Davin paused for a moment, unsure of what to say. For the first time in a long time he felt the silence creep up on them unwelcomingly. He felt the need to keep a conversation going also because he refused to leave that easily just because some girl decided she would bully her way in by staring at people until they turned to paranoia. While no sneer crawled upon his features, anyone could tell he remained uncertain and at the same time stubbornly concreted in his current place.
Whatever went on in her mind he couldn't begin to comprehend and Davin didn't bother trying. He ignored her comment and went to the lengths to give a half-apologetic look. "I thought you said you didn't care what people thought about you," he sputtered back, quickly losing that apologetic look that flashed only for a split second. A familiar twinge of a smirk creased his lips and his posture went from rigid to normal, although there appeared little different at the board straight shoulders and high held head. "I hate to inform you but your little tactic won't work on me like it might on everyone else."
Not that he needed to prove himself, well maybe he did, but he felt compelled to challenge this little routine of hers, if it was a routine. He had never seen her before that he recalled of, and he was certain if he had he would at least remember her. She was the person that would embed herself on someone's mind just to make them wary enough not to cross paths again. Intimidation? He wasn't quite sure; regardless, nothing showed on his somewhat arrogant appearance.

Like an artist had splashed paint on a canvas, she seemed to come alive again, if only for a little bit. A smirk curved her lips and a hand rested on her hip, never too far from the brown weapons pouch on her leg, strawberry-blonde locks cascading down her shoulders and back, much like a waterfall, or more appropriately, rain fell from storm clouds. "Heh, no need to try so hard over your words, you know. It hasn't stormed in a while, and it recharges me, as to say."
She wondered why she had bothered to reveal that she liked storms. Sure, she did, but she wasn't the type of person that just talked about herself. The defense mechanism that was so typical of her kicked in, and she retained her former look, her eyes emptying of emotion looking very much like glass once again.
Her head looked up towards the sky, almost like a doll in the stiffness of the sudden movement. Why was it so hot out ? Why couldn't it be winter all year round ! She seriously should move to Siberia or something. Although, if it was winter all year round, she could never have her beloved storms. That just wasn't acceptable, and it could never be acceptable. She really did need storms to make her feel alive. It was pathetic really. How could someone be so dependent on one thing ? She felt the wind stir her hair and clothing, and she turned back to him.
What was he going to say exactly...

For the first time, some visible reaction laced her features and for a moment he would have compared it to poison but refrained from saying anything. For now he kept his peace, sort of. Her response annoyed him, but Davin played it off with a visible and taunting smirk of his own that lasted all for about two seconds until all dissipated. He gave her a deadened look, something that looked as if it wanted no more to trifle with something, some obscure point that held no significance. "Imagine what you like," he responded smoothly with a nonchalant shrug.
Storms recharging? Now that was the first he heard since wandering the great landscapes and halls of Chimera Academy. Yet this did little to surprise Davin and he nodded slowly, pretending he understood but easily conveying this portion of her recharging did not compliment him as well. "You look low on batteries," he added.
Any and every emotion that held lines on her face immediately vanished before his eyes. She was a bloody robot! Not even he mastered the skills of turning an emotion on and immediately shutting it back down again and within seconds. He did that sometimes but she did it as if it were second nature and it was this fact alone that sent a chill down his spine. He shifted his weight stiffly and looked at her curiously. "You're a very good robot, I have to say," he went on, trying to destroy the silence that mocked him. Usually he enjoyed silence, relished it, but with her around it went unwelcome.
Curiously, he tilted forward and followed her gaze to the sky, but saw nothing other than the blue color that filled the atmosphere. "Afraid there's nothing up there." Davin thought it nice and appropriate to put that out there for her so she wouldn't strain her dull eyes more than she needed to. The only thing that gave her any personality when she talked was her accent.

She scowled slightly as he made a clever comment about the empty sky, and she gracefully flipped her bangs out of her eyes with a flick of her finger, a small scoff came from her lips as a reply."Well, that's the problem. It's been too long since a storm and I'm growing weary of the sun." Hmm, she wondered exactly how chilidish she had sounded at that moment, but quickly dismissed it as she turned to face him, a smirk on her face.
"By the way, it's the way my father trained me. Can't really help being a robot."
It really was a sore spot for her, hence why she only hung around Maxim and Ciel. They understood why she was that way, and never questioned. Mostly because they were the same. Except Maxim was solemn and Ciel was.. well, that subject was complicated.. Maybe he had seen them around.
"Hmm, maybe you've seen my friends ? Their named Maxim and Ciel Rosseau ? I've been looking for them all day !"
She allowed a bit of herself to shine through now, her former monotony being repressed as she watched him. He was more interesting than any of the other students she had seen walking around, and she had seen some weird things in her life for sure. She stood, an air of authority about her as she stood with her hand on her hip, a determined look on her face. Thoughts about if he was a good fighter and what abilities he could posses ran through her mind, instinctively going into analytic mode as the hand on her hip was conveniently placed near her weapons pouch. She doubted he was an agressive being, but one could never be too careful around those one didn't know.
"If it helps at all, they both have ridiculously large swords."

The formal greeting surprised him and in a lighthearted mocking attempt, he bowed stiffly. "Montreux, Garm," he added smoothly. Her wink caught him off guard but he smiled in return mischievously. Inside, he hoped that didn't frighten her off. Somehow, the robot managed to remain ahead of him as far as friends went; Davin didn't have many friends. Maybe he was the oddball and he just hadn't figured it out yet, but at eighteen something had to be off a bit. Then again, his classes were filled up with those a year or two younger than him. Younger people annoyed him to an extent but he usually coped well.
She seemed pretty nice after she warmed up a bit. How long had they stood here? He didn't know, didn't really care either. Davin had all the time in the world to spend now since his homework was now finished and all. Music theory, he swore he would never sign up for that class again. Too much hard work and too much to understand that he probably should have already known. "Seems like after you warm up you have a bit of a personality. Maybe the sun is actually good. Can't imagine what you'd be like if you had weather your way." Storms. He huffed at that; who on earth would want weather to turn to that again?
All in good fun though; he felt comfortable around her. Why that was well, he didn't know. Davin rarely considered a dangerous side to everyone. He enjoyed personifying life as something sarcastic and a joke to an extent. Making fun of life kept him going and kept a smile plastered on his face. He turned his back to her and walked away. "If it was one of your friends I saw, I think they went this way."

She wouldn't say it had never happened before, but it was rare for someone to even try to apologize to her. She gave him a small smile, her own way of apologizing for cutting him off. Aalish was simply becoming anxious that she hadn't seen or heard from either of her only friends. Although, she had calmed down a bit, since she and Davin seemed to be getting along pretty well with eachother. Wow, she knew a stranger's name... Well, he couldn't exactly be called a stranger now, since they had talked to eachother and found out miniscule details. In the end, the tiniest details seemed to be the most important.
"Aalish De Lamarliere, chimera."
The words rolled smoothly off her tongue with her beloved country's accent, winking one of her light blue eyes at him through her strawberry-blonde bangs. She had heard of him, she had heard he was a Garm. Honestly, she thought they were interesting creatures, especially the way misfortune seemed to follow. Really, she didn't buy it. Nothing was happening to her, and she had been talking to him for a good while now. Maybe it only affected certain races ? Or maybe he could direct those ill intentions ? She wanted to ask him more, but didn't wish to offend him. Everyone had their sore subjects, and she didn't really know his yet. -------------------------------------------------------------------

Ciel had been walking aimlessly about the campus all day, not really having anywhere in particular to go. He hadn't shown up to classes today at all, and figured he'd have to listen to Maxim nag him later for it. He knew his brother cared and all, but sometimes he reminded Ciel of a woman with his overly paternal ways. Of course that thought was quickly thrown away when they'd spar.
Now that he'd thought about it he'd probably get scolded by Aalish as well. She was the only friend he had besides his brother, and yet he really didn't mind it. They were alike in so many ways, so it was just natural the way they got along. As if sensing what he was thinking about, the wind brought along the unique smell of Aalish's perfume, which he decided to follow. It smelled the unique scent that appeared before it rained and the mix of the ocean.
He soon found her, and she was talking to someone. A guy who he hadn't seen around before, and instincts of distrust immediately surfaced along with irritation that quickly soiled his formerly good mood. He stepped in silence up behind her and walked up to her side as he had started to walk away. He noticed she hadn't realized he was there and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Aalish." --------------------------------------------------------- She had been watching Davin walk away, not having noticed a familiar presence walk up behind her. She felt the warmth of a hand on her shoulder and the silk of Ciel's voice as he addressed her. She turned blue eyes to meet his and smiled a fond look in her eyes as she returned the greeting.
"Ciel ! I'll never know how you lug that sword around. This is Davin."
Even thought the thought of him carrying around the sword was amazing, the way he could swing it was awe-inspiring. She had tried to pick it up once, and ended up face-planting into the ground. It had been humiliating, and she had decided to stick to her lighter weapons instead.

The presence was thick around him and he could feel the stranger lope up. Davin's hair stood on the back of his neck and he disliked this Ciel. The way he acted, even without words, seemed domineering, controlling. This was the embodiment of everything Davin disliked, everything he went against. The garm felt a snarl threaten to cross his face, but refused it and ended up smiling though all of it was an act. Sometimes Davin could be a good actor; he usually kept masks well, but something about the smile appeared stiff and false.
The comment about the sword turned his attention to the weapon itself. Why carry that thing around? Some people were too paranoid, according to him. Not that life was all butterflies and blue skies, but he personally saw no need for it. Then again, maybe it was a biased observance. "Hey," he responded with a twinge of gruffness to his voice at the introduction. With his canine-like instincts, he could feel the stare of dislike cloud up around them. The situation, he felt, would get no better, but nothing really had to happen. Yet a threatening air swirled around Ciel.
He was annoyed, irritated, and all of the above probably. Davin didn't understand why exactly, but he didn't care either. The smile he wore on his face turned into a small smirk. What good did it do to him to feel that he annoyed this man? Who knew. Davin found it somewhat amusing that his presence already caused someone to obtain a sour mood. "I hope my appearance doesn't irritate you," he finally commented when the look never changed. Surely Ciel didn't assume that no one would say anything about the hardened look that creased his features. How on earth he had friends was beyond Davin. And he probably didn't have many if he assumed correctly.

Ciel had never been one for games, and it would seem that the Garm intended to trick him into one. He really didn't enjoy being tricked, either. Something about Davin's presence was like a thorn in his side, or an itch that he couldn't scratch. The dark look on Ciel's face merely remained were it was as Davin made his trivial comments, he really didn't care what he thought. Aalish, however, was another matter. She was the first to open up to him at home, and she quite amused him with her drive to protect him from the world. It didn't seem to matter to her that the point was void, and that the damage had already been done.
"Your hope is pointless, but you already knew that."
She was his only friend apart from his brother, and he certainly had no intention of losing the time she spent with him to the Garm.He had already claimed that time, and if he had to eliminate the Garm to re-claim it, he had no qualms about doing so.Ciel shifted his stance so he was standing protectively a bit in front of Aalish and briefly wondered what the point of the Garm's were. To push people over the edge of insanity perhaps ? Quite irritating, to say the least. Ciel didn't bother to suppress his hostility. Merely the flash of fury in his eyes to give his warning. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Aalish deciphered Ciel's stance a bit in front of her, and looked from him to Davin. She had hoped Ciel wouldn't react in this way, but she supposed she should have expected. He wasn't one to let people into his inner circle, and if he did it would take time. It had taken her quite a while to become his friend, and she understood him more than 99.9 percent of the world. Ciel didn't enjoy taking risks, because they usually backfired on him. He had never had much in life, and she understood his want to protect it. Ciel and his brother were alike in that aspect, and she admired it.
She had also made it her mission to protect them.
Although, with their fighting skills, she didn't really need to, she made sure she was always there to keep them safe. Now, it was almost as if she didn't know how to react. Davin had been kinder to her than most, and Aalish believed they could be good friends. That is, if Ciel didn't kill him first. She wouldn't interfere, but her stance made it clear she wouldn't assist Ciel in harming her friend. She looked back to Davin, something akin to apology in her eyes, but it wasn't. She could never be ashamed of Ciel.

There was no attempt made by this Ciel to hide anything he thought. Davin read everything clearly upon his face and he said nothing of it, only waited for what he expected to be a trite response. It came soon enough and Davin momentarily clenched his fist. Full of contradictions; he hated fights yet he anticipated them with a somewhat arrogant demeanor. For the moment he said nothing, but he noticed all of the movements and the appearances of both of them. For a split second he would say Aalish appeared abashed but it disappeared. "Well of course I did. You're not one to conceal anything apparently." His tone dripped in sarcasm.
In second thought, he didn't want a fight, but if it came to that he assumed Ciel would ignite any hopes of one. Davin could only edge things on, he never initiated violence. Maybe indirectly, but never directly unless he felt the need to, which had only been once before. For the most part he remained a quiet and rather peaceful individual.
He kept a blank look on his face, though he wanted to prod and understand what wrath he brought against Ciel. Davin was not up for apologies; he had nothing to apologize for and sorry was a bitter word that played upon the tongue. He refused to use it, especially in this case. "I'm not going to hurt her," he stated defensively. The way Ciel acted was embarrassing. This anger and rage made no sense to Davin. While he was not the most peaceful of the flock, he didn't go wielding random anger at people who had done nothing. If he did, he made sure to go off by himself. "You're acting immature," he stated, trying to keep his tone detached.
